2008: A Year In Fashion
With everything that’s happened to her in recent years (falling out with BFF Paris Hilton, coming under attack for her ever-increasing weight loss and a brush with the law for driving under the influence to name just a few things), who wasn’t over the moon when Nicole Richie met and fell in love with Good Charlotte rocker Joel Madden, settled down and fell pregnant with the pair’s first child? Following a super-stylish pregnancy full of maxi dresses and oversized jersey pieces, Nicole welcomed daughter Harlow Winter Kate into the world on 11th January – and, judging from what we’ve seen of her so far, little Harlow looks set to follow in her mum’s stylish footsteps.
Proving London’s where it’s at when it comes to cool, Fashion Week was a whirlwind of shows, parties and fabulous outfits. The Geldof sisters managed to hit up just about every party going, as well as sitting front row at several shows, whilst our personal highlight was the frock Asos Magazine cover girl Alexa Chung wore to host the Elle Style Awards – a frilly pink Luella number.
The fashion! The gossip! The bitching! This year we finally found a show to take the place of our sadly departed Sex and the City in the fashion stakes – Gossip Girl. From the edgy style of protagonist Serena (played by Blake Lively) to the preppy look of her frenemy Blair (Leighton Meester), we were officially hooked. Oh, and the boys weren’t bad to look at either. Xoxo.
Who’d have thought it? On the promo trail for her new movie Iron Man (which just so happened to turn out to be a massive box office hit), Gwyneth Paltrow shrugged off her macrobiotic-obsessed (and ever so slightly boring) image and emerged as this year’s yummiest mummy in a series of thigh-skimming little black dresses and sky-high heels. We bet hubbie Chris was over the moon…
After months of speculation, rumoured cat fights and pap shots from the set (that only increased our ridiculous level of excitement), Sex and the City: The Movie finally became a reality – and how we rejoiced! A slew of premieres took place to celebrate the release across the globe, each one giving us a chance to ogle the four stars’ outfits – but that was nothing compared to the fashion we found ourselves gazing at on the big screen on Carrie and co. We really hope the rumours of a sequel are true!
Following a lifetime of ill-health and a rumoured year-long battle with brain cancer, fashion legend Yves Saint Laurent sadly passed away on 1st June. The man attributed with revolutionising the way women dressed by introducing masculine yet elegant tailoring (most notably with his infamous “Le Smoking” tuxedo) was one of the 20th century’s leading forces in fashion, and his passing was mourned by fashion industry insiders, celebrities and public figures the world over. He will be dearly missed.
Actress Mischa Barton turned designer this year with her very first range of self-designed bags, which echoed her own bohemian style with slouchy leather, tassels and buckles. We were honoured and thrilled to be the exclusive online stockists of the range, with Mischa telling us “My sister is really into asos.com and told me all about it. I didn’t want the bags to be available everywhere – I think it makes them more special this way”.
Oh, Cheryl Cole – how we fell for you this year! Having started 2008 with the revelation that her husband, footballer Ashley, had cheated on her after a boozy night out (what a fool), we bet Cheryl never expected that this would really be her year. Having joined the X Factor judging team following Sharon Osbourne’s departure, the Girls Aloud star quickly won a place in the British public’s heart with her kind (and often emotional) words to hopeful contestants, her faultless fashion choices and her ever-growing hair. We *heart* her.
A master of reinvention, Victoria Beckham stole the show at New York Fashion Week when she stepped out at the Marc Jacobs show sporting a brand new pixie cut, which quickly became known as the ‘Poxie’. Furthermore, the Spice Girl’s very first line of dresses went down a storm with the press, with the fashion press using words such as “beautiful”, “desirable” and “classy” to describe the range. Although, with prices ranging from £600 to £1,900, we could only look and admire.
Who better to collaborate with lingerie heavyweights Wonderbra than Dita Von Teese, the sexy burlesque star? The range, featuring lots of sexy satin and lace, went down a storm when it launched online, and so it was no surprise that hundreds of you entered our competition to win a set from the range signed by Dita herself. In the end there could only be one winner, and that was Aoife Travers – we hope you’re enjoying your prize, Aoife!
What a couple of years it’s been for Jourdan Dunn. Just two short years ago she was a normal London school girl – then, having been spotted by a model scout in Hammersmith Primark, her life was turned upside down. She was signed up by Storm, and was soon posing for the likes of Vogue, I-D and Dazed & Confused and strutting down catwalks in New York, London, Paris and Milan. To top it all off, in November the 19-year old was named Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards. Better watch out, Kate!
With Cheryl Cole acting as their mentor, Alexandra Burke and Diana Vickers were always going to be amongst the best dressed on this year’s X Factor, but who could have predicted just what a thrilling fashion extravaganza it would prove to be? Diana won our hearts with her Temperley, Ashish and customised Topshop dresses, whilst eventual winner Alexandra almost out-divaed her idol, Beyonce, in a string of stunning, glittering gowns. And how could we forget the Candy Man outfit? Ones to watch in 2009, wethinks…
